Week 5: Volcanos

Does Chile have volcanos?

Chile is known to be prone to natural disasters since it sits along the Ring of Fire. This causes the country to experience earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Some of these earthquakes cause volcanic activity around the country. Chile has about 2,000 volcanoes and only about 60 are active. The Andes is where many of the volcanoes are at since it is on the south American plate where the Nazca plate subducts beneth it causing volcanoes to errupt due to the earthquakes. One of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Chile is the Villarrica and the last major eruption was in 2023 after this it only has had some minor erruptions. As a result, these volcanoes release ash and can cause bad air quality.

How does Chile take precautions/ mitigation measures?

Chile has volcanic erruptions every now and then and the Chile National Geology and Mining Servive known as (SERNAGEOMIN) helps monitor any geological activity and helps inform the citizens in Chile. The government website shows the steps to be able to stay safe during a volcano eruption. They recommend to listent to authorities. They advice to have a plan in case of an eruption and to stay informed through radios. They recommend to keep your face and ears covered to not breathe in any ashes. If you have to stay at home they advice to cover all the windows and doors to not let in any debrise.

SERNAGEOMIN help send alerts that are color coded to warn the people in Chile about any erruptions. Green being normal activity and red meaning there is an eruption and evacuation should be in progress. Chiles national disaster prevention and response service also helps assist people with alers and emergency guidance for instructions on what to do.

  1. Thank you for all the information regarding Chile's volcanic activity. I don't know much about this country but 60 active volcanos sound like a lot compared to most places! I wonder how often these volcanoes are actually erupting on a regular basis and if that is affecting the surrounding population. Thankfully, you have described their mitigation and protection efforts that can help reduce risk for this country.

  2. Hello Angelica,
Chile is very similar to Japan in that they both sit in the ring of fire. I found it fascinating that Chile has around 2,000 volcanoes, with only 60 being active that is a large number of volcanoes to have in one place. I also appreciate how you highlighted Chile’s mitigation efforts. It’s reassuring to know that organizations like SERNAGEOMIN actively monitor volcanic activity and provide warnings to the citizens of Chile in the event of a volcanic threat.

  3. Hi Angelica,
It's very interesting to compare the extreme difference between our country's volcanic activity. On one hand, my country, Bangladesh, has zero volcanic active volcanic activity, whereas your country has an astounding 60 active volcanoes. Since my country does not have any precautions when it comes to volcanoes, it was also enjoyable to read the precautions and steps taken in the case of a volcano eruption.
