Week 2: Tectonic Plates
Chile
The Country Chile sits on the South American Plate with the Nazca Plate to the left/ western side of the country and has a lower border with the Antarctic Plate. Chile is near many tectonic plates which makes it prone to natural disasters. Chile's fascinating fact is that it is on the Pacific Ring of Fire which is an area that has earthquakes and volcano eruptions. Chile is on the convergent boundary, meaning there is a collision between two plates. In this process, the Nazca Plate subducts under the South American Plate because of the softer and more delicate. The ocean plate of Nazca ends up going under the South American Plate because of the softer and more delicate layer. This pressure caused the formation of the Andes Mountains which South America is known for.
After noting the following tectonic plates and boundaries Chile is known for being prone to having major earthquakes that result in tsunamis or volcano eruptions. Due to subduction from the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate, many earthquakes occur and end up resulting in tsunamis. Chile is prone to natural disasters and thus has ways to prevent any disasters and catastrophes.
Chile's position in the Ring of Fire causes the subduction impact of the magma to rise and erupt. Chile has many active volcanoes that are monitored. Chile is a country that is prone to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes. Many of the people in Chile are aware of the dangers and hazards of living here.

Hi Angelica! Similar to Chile, my chosen country of Costa Rica is also affected by the Nazca plate. Although it sounds like Chile is more directly affected by that particular plate. For Costa Rica, it has an indirect effect as it is near a triple junction of multiple plates, Nazca being one of them. Costa Rica also experiences earthquakes due to the Cocos plate rubbing underneath the Caribbean plate similar to how Chile has the two plates rubbing one underneath the other. Chile and Costa Rica seem very similar in the fact that they both experience earthquakes, volcanos and tsunamis. Unlike Chile though, not many of Costa Ricas volcanoes have been active recently.
ReplyDeleteHi Angelica, Chile’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it one of the most seismically and volcanically active countries in the world. The Nazca Plate subducting beneath the South American Plate causes frequent earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Chile has experienced some of the strongest earthquakes in history, including the 1960 Valdivia earthquake (9.5 magnitude). The country has strict building codes, early warning systems, and emergency response plans to mitigate disasters. Despite the risks, Chileans are well-prepared for these natural events.
