Week 1: Chile

Chile

Chile is a country located in Southern America on the western side of Argentina. It is a long and narrow country, meaning it has different climates along the country. It stretches from about 4,300 kilometers (2,671 miles) in length and 177 kilometers (110 miles) in width on average. It has many mountains around it with the Andes being in the country. The Andes are large mountains between Chile and Argentina that are very big and provide fresh water for people. Much of the population in the country lives in the central part of the country where the big cities are located. The capital of Chile is Santiago where the climate is cool and humid. Due to the country's length, the weather varies from the north to the south with different temperatures. The country relies on agricultural production and mining. This country is known for the Atacama Desert which is known to be the driest nonpolar desert in the world. Chile is a beautiful country with a blend of Spanish and indigenous cultures.

Around the world, many natural disasters in every country range from hazards to disasters, and catastrophes. Chile is known to have a few natural disasters and they have been affected by earthquakes and tsunamis. What are hazards, disasters, and catastrophes?
Hazards: Hazards are when there could be a possibility of a threat to humans and property. Hazards can range from environmental, chemical, physical, etc.

Disasters: Disasters are the result of when hazards have damaged at least ten people have been killed, one hundred are affected, declared a state of emergency, or requested international assistance to be declared a disaster. Disasters impact the community more than hazards and tend to last longer to fix.

Catastrophes: Catastrophes on the other hand are a greater disaster that requires more time and money to recover from the impacts. This type of disaster is bigger and has more of an impact on the people living in the area for years.

These are the differences between hazards, disasters, and catastrophes that can impact a countries well being.
