Week 3: Earthquakes
Chile's Earthquakes
Chile is in a position that has many earthquakes since it sits on the Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes from seismic activity. The high amount of seismic activity causes these natural disasters to occur in the country more often than in other countries further away from the plate boundaries. Chile has earthquakes often due to its close plate-to-plate contact that has convergent boundaries. In the image above you can see that it is in the red zone where severe earthquakes occur. Due to the subduction of the Nazca plate under the South American plate, many horrible earthquakes have occurred.
Chile had the biggest earthquake ever to be recorded at a magnitude of 9.5 in May of 1960. This earthquake lasted for a few minutes and caused a lot of damage to the country. There were many landslides due to the earthquake and it also caused a tsunami that killed many people. Additionally, this earthquake caused widespread damage to countries such as Japan, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Chile's most recent earthquake was off the coast of central Chile at a magnitude of 5.2 on February 10, 2025. Therefore, Chile's position near the Nazca plate is constantly going under the South American plate creating many small earthquakes nearby.
Chile's earthquake mitigation strategy to keep its people safe include chile's changes to their building codes to be able to withstand the seismic activity. This helps buildings not collasps as easily as before and ensure safe structures. Chile has also advances their warning systems for any tsunami warnings from the sea level changes from the two plates collideing against each other. They have efficient warning drills that help the people stay prepared for any natural disasters. The Chile government has continued to implement amendments to their regulations to better prepare themselves. Organizations such as the National Emergency Management Office of Chile (ONEMI) and Chile's National Tsunami Warning Center have helped their citizens know what to do in case of any emergency. They are able to successfully monitor the area for any earthquakes to be able to learn more about them each time.
Regardless of where you live, it is always important to be attentive and aware of how to protect ourselves from seismic activity because we never know how hard the next one could hit. Being prepared will enable us to save our lives and those around us. Chile's dedication in being prepared from the many earthquakes that occur in this sensitive area make it a safe country with regulations to keep citizens safe.

I did not know Chile recently experienced an earthquake! It sounds like Chile has really great mitigation practices to ensure their citizens are well prepared and safe when earthquakes occur.
ReplyDeleteHey Angelica, Great post & visuals! I wasn’t really aware of all the earthquakes chile has faced the image you showed of the warped buildings is trully eye opening. It seems chile has definitely learned and continues to improve their past mistakes ensuring that public safety is the top priority.
